To the credit of a dream by Derek Mathews, the founder, along with the Mathews family, the Gathering of Nations (GON) Pow Wow is one of the most culturally rich and spectacular experiences in the world and it has a distinctive history on the fairgrounds at EXPO New Mexico.

The oldest recorded powwow in North America, held in Charlestown, Rhode Island on the tribes reservation, by the old Narragansett Indian Church. This powwow used to be closed off to the general public until around the 1950s unless invited as a special guest.

The Gathering of Nations is the largest pow-wow in the United States and North America. It is held annually on the fourth weekend in April, on the Powwow Grounds at Expo NM, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over 565 tribes from around the United States and 220 from Canada travel to Albuquerque to participate.

Appropriate dress is required in the arena. If you are not in regalia, long pants, skirt and dress type shirts are preferred. Short pants, halter tops, bare feet, hats and muscle shirts are not acceptable attire.

The most common one I've heard begins with a tale of 49 Native American servicemen not returning home from World War II. Songs were written and sung at Pow-Wows to honor these men who gave their lives for their country. Today, the term “49er” has evolved into something new and exciting.

Arrive On Time. There is very little lull in a powwow, so don't be late. Every powwow starts with a prayer and a grand entry. After grand entry, dancers participate in their specific categories, with the Elders usually starting things off.
